Belägringen av Sovjetunionens näst största stad varade i 890 dagar och var en av andra världskrigets hemskaste händelser. Förhållandena inne i staden är svåra att föreställa sig. Efter hårda gatustrider skars Leningrads viktigaste försörjningslinjer av. Detta och konstanta bombräder, kombinerat med sinande matförråd, betydde att man tvingades ransonera hårt. De som inte hörsammade detta sköts. Den 19 januari 1944 befriades staden slutligen av sovjetiska styrkor. Under belägringen hade 600000 av stadens invånare svultit ihjäl och 200000 hade dött i bombningarna.
